In a class of 125 students, 70 students passed in mathematics, 56 students passed in statistics, and 30 passed in both. The probability that a randomly selected student in the class has passed only one subject is Draw a Venn diagram or use the inclusion/exclusion principle to show that
there are 70-30=40 students who only passed mathematics and 56-30=26 students who only passed statistics.
There is therefore a total of 40+26=66 pupils who only passed one subject.
So what is the probability of randomly choosing a student from a class of 125 such that that student is one of 66 who only passed one subject? u6
